Now is the time for us to move beyond contrived statements and to assert action to solidify our collective identity. Now is the time for us to seek the opportunity to learn and not be silent. We therefore call on every stakeholder in international education to committing to action and making our community more socially just. What does the international education community need to do now?

 

We commit to:

 

-acknowledge that Black Lives Matter and the racialized experiences, though not a monolith, of people of African descent, regardless of country of origin are shared and felt.

 

-speak up now about racism and all forms of discrimination in international education as well as how these experiences are perpetuated in international spaces.

 

-tackle the eradication of racism at all levels including but not limited to (boards, recruitment, accreditation, graduate programs, schools, parents) become aware of our racial and cultural blind-spots by reading about, listening to, collaborating with and implementing sustainable anti-racist practices by championing the voices and contributions of racially and ethnically diverse educators. Focus on anti-racism work.

 

-have school and organization plans focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion that is co-created with our community.  Commit to partnering with community members that are closest to the problem as they are usually closest to the solution.

 

-challenge Whiteness, and even White Supremacy, in all its subtle and overt forms. For white educators, we acknowledge benefiting from privilege and structures of oppression against people of color, and we stand now to become part of the solution despite and in spite of current racialized incidents. We commit to become a part of the solution even when political and racial unrest are not at the forefront of the news cycle.

 

-actively ally with, amplify, and mentor educators of color who come from all parts of the globe. Aspire to be co-conspirators.

 

-educate our students and parents about the value of racial and ethnic diversity through our conversations, curriculum, and school-community workshops.

 

-support those international education organizations committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Launch of new association focused on international educators and leaders of color

Dallas, Texas, January 6, 2020 – A new international education association focused on the global majority has launched. The Association of International Educators and Leaders of Color (AIELOC) is devoted to amplifying the work of international educators and leaders of color with a focus on advocacy, learning, and research.

“When I started working in education internationally it was rare to connect and see others who looked like me. We want to make sure educators and leaders of color know there is a community to support them,” said AIELOC Founder Kevin Simpson.

Simpson is founder of KDSL Global, a leading learning organization focused on empowering educators and education companies globally. He has served 500+ schools and thousands of educators in 20 countries worldwide. His journey working abroad started in 2005 in Vientiane, Laos.  Almost three years ago Simpson set up a Facebook group devoted to sharing opportunities for educators and leaders of color after a highly qualified colleague was discouraged from pursuing a leadership position because her country of origin did not match the expectation.

Last year Simpson’s company researched the race and gender of school leaders at US Department of State Assisted Schools around the world. The findings showed that leaders were mostly white and male. On Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5, MENA region teachers and teams will convene in Dubai at Dunecrest American School as part of an initiative of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Connected Community in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) called the Powered by Teach to Lead Summit.   During a summit, teams of educators convene to think deeply about a problem of practice – an idea for how to improve learning in their school or country context – and to work as a team to plan solutions. Organized by KDSL Global, a UAE-based education company, the Powered by Teach to Lead Summit seeks to allow participating teams to:

  • Share ideas and best practices and learn from examples of existing teacher leadership efforts;
  • Identify common challenges and create concrete, actionable teacher leadership plans to address them locally;
  • Network and build relationships with other educators and leaders in their region; and
  • Identify promising ideas for follow-up support through future engagement events.

Dubai based Summit Mentor Dima Yousef said, “Teach to Lead provides teacher-led teams with time, skills and support to put their ideas into action. Our KDSL Global Intern recently had the opportunity to interview Rania Nasr of Risalla Education Consulting. Currently, Nasr is based in the United Arab Emirates and passionate about training, teaching and learning, and shifting how Arabic and Islamic Education are taught in schools. Her company is a new collaborating partner with KDSL Global.

Tell us about Risalla Education Consulting.

Risalla Education Consulting provides hands-on workshops designed specifically for teachers of Arabic, Social Studies, Moral Education, and Islamic Education. We aim to help them create a student-focused learning environment, quality lesson plans, differentiated activities and assessments, and engaging resources to increase the level of student engagement and enhance the overall learning experience. We are a Dubai-based training and education consultancy, exclusively dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of those subjects across the region. By incorporating the most recent teaching methods and practices, our workshops focus on how to engage students in higher order thinking skills within those subject areas, and keep them motivated to achieve the standards set by the Ministry of Education.

Our cross-cultural domain expertise gives us unique insight and ability to cater to the challenges currently facing Arabic and Islamic Education departments in the GCC. We understand that teachers come from varying backgrounds in education, with different outlooks on teaching and learning. What challenges are Arabic and Islamic Education currently facing?

  • Arabic and Islamic Education in most schools are not in line with all other subject areas because they are not engaging enough to keep students focused and motivated, and in many cases students do not take pride in their language and culture.
  • Schools do not invest in training their Arabic and Islamic Education teachers on a continuous basis, and when training is provided it is not concise, specialized, or focused.
  • Students are generally unmotivated, uninterested, and shy away from these subject areas in international schools. There is little sense of pride and enthusiasm shown, and the underlying cause is always the method in which these subjects are being taught.
  • Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Education come from varying backgrounds and have different mindsets when it comes to education. Often times, their teaching methods are traditional and lack creativity.
  • Lack of online resources, and lack of engaging use of technology within the classroom

 

Tell us about the teacher training your company offers.

  • We have over 50 training courses approved by KHDA, and are delivered in both Arabic and English.
  • We work directly with teachers in our training’s through a hands-on learning environment.
  • Our training courses are themselves models of how to plan an effective lesson while considering differentiation, assessment for learning throughout the lesson, and engaging activities throughout. The training’s also focus on the ways in which teachers can ensure and measure progress within lessons.
  • Our training’s cover various topics and are based on the teacher’s development needs. The topics covered range from depth of knowledge, visual learning and inclusion to preparing for inspections and assessment data. We work with both teachers, and head of departments to ensure they are successful in expanding their skill sets and applying them into their work.

Our KDSL Global Intern recently had the opportunity to interview Barbara Zielonka about innovation and her new book. Zielonka gives personal insight into her teaching strategies and approaches that have helped her bring innovation into her curriculum and meet the needs of the learners of today and tomorrow.

 

Tell us about Education Influence and the role that innovation plays in education. 

Education Influence is a network of teachers handpicked for their influential leadership in the community. They are chosen to act as beacons to educators around the world who may require guidance to allow their children to reach their full potential. Education Influence is also a hub for teachers all over the world to come together, safe in the knowledge that they can access a local influencer who is willing to help them move forward.

 

I believe education plays a very important role in developing the next generation of problem solvers, critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, innovators and go-getters. If we really want our students to become successful, we need to create innovative education systems. For many teachers, innovation is strictly linked with the latest technology they use in their classrooms which is true to a certain degree, but for me, innovation means engaging students in ways we never have before and stepping outside of the box. Once teachers develop an innovative mindset and get out of their comfort zone, their students will be able to do the same. We, educators, need to create authentic and innovative opportunities for our students instead of focusing on scores and tests.

 

Tell us about your new book, “Keys to Educational Success: The Teaching Methods of a Top 10 Finalist of the Global Teacher Prize.”

Writing a book has always been on my bucket list. In 2014, I coauthored an English course book and I still remember the feeling I felt when I held it in my hands. In 2018, I participated in the Global Education and Skills Forum and after my masterclass one of the teachers approached me and asked whether I thought about publishing a book where I could share all my teaching strategies and methods. This question made me think. So as you can see the idea to write this book was born then and I am glad I did it.

 

In Keys to Educational Success, I give a personal insight into my teaching strategies and approaches that have helped me bring innovation into my curriculum and meet the needs of the learners of today and tomorrow. Through many examples and practical tips, I show how giving students a voice and a choice, cultivating a lifelong learning mindset, allowing students to shape their learning and letting students follow their passions and interests has made me a successful and renowned educator.  The book is divided into 17 chapters that can be read in any order and can be purchased on Amazon.

What do you hope your readers gain from reading this book?

The purpose of this book is to show teachers, trainee teachers, leaders strategies, approaches and tools that will make their educational journey inspirational and successful. My hope is also that every reader recognizes the importance of a student-centered approach and lifelong learning mindset. These two elements have helped me shape the classroom of the future and spreading the word about them in my book may help other readers/educators accomplish their educational goals.

 

Barbara Zielonka Pic

Barbara Anna Zielonka is a full-time high school English teacher, global educator, educational technologist, teacher trainer, project manager, judge in international educational competitions, lifelong learner, catalyst for change and reader.

In 2007, she earned her master’s degree in English Philology from the University of Silesia, Poland. During the past eight years, she has frequently participated in many post-secondary learning programmes in Norway such as Professional Digital Competence for Educators, ICT in Education, Educational Technology, Mentoring and Communication, international conferences, seminars and workshops all over the world. In 2012, she was one of the teachers who represented Norway at the Teachers Summer Institute 2012 in Amherst (Massachusetts), sponsored by the United States Department of State under the Fulbright Program. In 2014, she co-authored an English textbook Skills for vocational students. She participated in the Pestalozzi workshops and Comenius/ Erasmus programmes, Transatlantic Educators Dialogue between 2012-2019. In May 2017, Barbara received the ‘Gullepleprisen 2017’ from the Norwegian Educational Data Society (NPeD). This prestigious prize is awarded yearly to an educator who has used ICT in teaching in an innovative way. In June 2017, Barbara became the only European winner of the Great Global Project Challenge Grant for her global project called ‘The Universe is Made of Tiny Stories’. In March 2018, Barbara was named one of the top 10 finalists of the one million dollar Global Teacher Prize. In May 2018, Barbara became the laureate of the ‘Outstanding Pole in Norway’ contest in the category of Science.

In her teaching of English, Barbara focuses on the power of international projects, the pedagogical use of ICT tools, learner empowerment, entrepreneurship, innovation and connections-based learning. Several of her global and collaborative projects have received international recognition and awards. She also serves as an ambassador in the following organisations: Varkey Foundation, eTwinning, Connections-Based Learning, HundrED, Teach SDGs and Education Influence. She conducts professional development sessions as well.

What inspired you to start Mirai?

The belief that education and learning are critical drivers of preparing people of all ages and countries for the future workforce. It isn’t just about starting schools and neither is it about creating workforce training programs, it’s about creating ecologies of learning and innovation that have measurable impact, that encourage learning and that help people find opportunities.

 

What was the mission at the outset?

The mission is to bring together the best in learning design, learning technologies and innovation to ensure employability, opportunity and innovation for people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. We saw a huge gap in what was happening on the ground, in schools and in workplaces versus what needs to be happening for future workforce needs.

 

What is the most important thing that you are working on right now and how are you making it happen?

While technology is not the definition of innovation, it is definitely a driver. We are focusing our efforts right now in sourcing the best in learning technologies from different parts of the world, and bringing it to the Middle East and Asia to be able to scale the impact of great learning.

We are working with schools and corporates on creating ecologies of innovative learning through learning & leadership consulting, predictive analytic models and digital learning.

Nyla Tariq Picture

Nyla Tariq is motivated to create global social change. Her work spans 4 continents & all ages of learners, innovating to build people’s talents and capabilities.

She co-launched Mirai, one of the Middle East’s first innovation consultancies, to help schools, businesses, & governments prepare for the future.

Prior to that, she led business development at NYU StartEd Accelerator, working with leading startups & investors in the U.S EdTech space. Nyla has led growth & training for one of the U.A.E’s top teacher development & training platforms and has worked to implement workforce strategies for thousands of GCC based blue-collar workers.

She also co-founded Kids World Group in the U.A.E, a network of boutique Montessori nurseries delivering affordable & high-quality early years education. At Kids World, she led operations, taught toddlers fine-motor skills, & trained teachers.

Nyla is a passionate advocate of gender & minority rights. To that end, she has personally educated men on gender-based violence in the favelas of Brazil and taught English to increase the employability of women in refugee camps in Greece.

A global community that connects diverse people, ideas and resources, AAIE helps international educators lead with vision, wisdom, courage and integrity.

AAIE is the worldwide organization that connects school leaders to new ideas, opportunities– serving as a disruptive influence– and change agent to ensure the viability, integrity and future of overseas schools.

I joined AAIE based on these three statements above.  Last year after attending #AAIE2018 there was a shock after noticing how much the international education leadership community lacked in the diversity department. There was talk at a session about critical issues (diversity being one of the topics). A hard decision was made not to attend #AAIE19 being that I was a member and studying in the AAIE Institute for International School Leadership.

 

Happy to see the topics below at the 2019 AAIE Conference CONVERSATION but do question if the strategic plan will shift at AAIE as well as at ALL international schools around diversity, equity, and inclusion in international leadership.
