On Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5, MENA region teachers and teams will convene in Dubai as part ofan initiative of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Connected Community in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) called the Powered by Teach to Lead Summit.   During a summit, teams of educators convene to think deeply about a problem of practice – an idea for how to improve learning in their school or country context – and to work as a team to plan solutions. Organized by KDSL Global, a UAE-based education company, the Powered by Teach to Lead Summit seeks to allow participating teams to:

  • Share ideas and best practices and learn from examples of existing teacher leadership efforts;
  • Identify common challenges and create concrete, actionable teacher leadership plans to address them locally;
  • Network and build relationships with other educators and leaders in their region; and
  • Identify promising ideas for follow-up support through future engagement events.

Dubai based Teacher Leader Evo Hannan said, “When you live a life beyond your limits, you have experiences beyond your imagination.”   Hannan will be the featured speaker on the first day of the summit andis currently the Spark Tank Coordinator at Dwight School Dubai. He continues to develop new ideas and leads a collective of innovative educators called ‘Innovation X’. He is also the founder of ‘Teacher Society’, a global education community that promotes teacher well-being and professional development, and the creator of the #INN4SDGs initiative.

KDSL Global Fellows 2019

KDSL Global, based in the United Arab Emirates and in the United States, is pleased to announce our new fellows.  The fellowship will run from January-December 2019 with a focus on writing, leadership, and launching a new education idea.

Octevia Torian is from Virginia and has 14 years of experience in the education field. In the past she has served as an instructional coach, advisor and advanced academics resource teacher. Currently, Octevia is in her second year of teaching in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates with a focus on the Next Generation Science Standards, Project-Based Learning, STEM, and teaching science at the middle school level.  She loves to bring real life experiences to the classroom for students and takes pleasure in seeing learners engaged in the classroom and applying their knowledge to everyday life. Octevia is a lifelong learner who is a member of professional development organizations such as ASCD and presents at education conferences. One of her latest projects involves initiating a pilot program at her school with Global Air Media, LLC. This program uses STEM curriculum to teach students about drone technology and entrepreneurship in the 21st century. At her school she leads a YouTube Club for students, a talk show for teachers, and is a co-host for a podcast called Dismissed.  She is a graduate from Averett University, Capella University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Sania Green-Reynolds is a Jamaican native who is living her dream of experiencing and contributing to education on a global level. She is an experienced and dynamic English teacher, curriculum, teaching and learning support expert, and believer. Sania has been teaching for 16 years (pre-training) and 11 years (post-training). She’s taught students (face to face) in Jamaica and the Caribbean, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and students of other nationalities in online forums, and hosts  personal and professional development workshops as well as speak at regional and international conferences. Over the years she has received various awards in education, which speak to her innovative and skilled approach to teaching and progressive student learning.

Sania is a best-selling co-author and a writer who has contributed to several international publications. She has been an inspiration to her students and colleagues alike. One of her books, The Self-Confidence Booster, was translated to Japanese to provide further inspiration and motivation to her students in Japan whom she believed could speak English more fluently if they were confident enough to do so. Sania has been awarded different awards such as English Teacher of the Month, Most Innovative English Teacher, Education Journal Middle East Teacher of the Week and recognized as the teacher with the highest NWEA MAP progress and attainment in her past school.

She believes in giving back to the community. As demonstrated by her work in community improvement and social work in education, which spans from the Caribbean to Africa and as a result, she is honored to be a Walden University Scholar of Change Awardee. She holds a 3-year Diploma in English Language and Literature Education, a B.Ed. in Elementary Education with 1st Class Honors, Certificates in TEFL, Supervisory Management and Coaching, and a M.S.Ed. In Educational Leadership and Administration with Honors.

At Teachers Supporting Teachers they believe that the students of Chicago deserve an excellent education, and that begins with our teachers.

 

Our KDSL Global Fellow Tiffany Johnson recently attended the TST Spring Elite Teacher Leader Networking Session in Chicago.  One aspect of the fellowship includes attending and creating leadership opportunities in your local context. Below is her reflection.

I’m writing this because the past event put together by Teachers Supporting Teachers (TST) was an opportunity that no Chicago educator should not have missed. I left feeling inspired from spending a day networking with some of the top educators in the city. But, I want to assure you that the founders of Teachers Supporting Teachers will be hosting more events that I recommend you attend. The location of the event was in the Willis (Sears to the old school Chicagoans) Tower where about 60 people in the field of education congregated. There were three breakout sessions that everyone had the opportunity to attend. All of these sessions were interactive and most importantly all focused on leadership. At the end of the event, TST mentioned that they are available for 1:1 mentoring with schools, which is something that many people, including myself, showed interest in. In the future, I recommend you attend any event TST puts together, because you will meet a variety of resource rich people.

Closing the STEM Gap

A new study called “Closing the STEM Gap” published in March 2018 by Microsoft surveyed more than 6,000 girls and young women on their interests and perceptions of science, technology, engineering and math. They found that girls lose interest in STEM careers as they get older. What can be done? The study cited recommendations to change this narrative. This included: role models and mentors, exposure to real-world examples of STEM, hands-on experience through participation in STEM-related clubs and activities, and encouragement from parents and educators could.

Our KDSL Global Fellow Tiffany Johnson recently interviewed one of her students to find out her perception about STEM after attending Interactive STEM Development Seminar for Underrepresented Students hosted by the Woods Educational Enrichment Foundation in Chicago. This was an additional program Johnson, who is implementing the recommendations in the study, suggested to her students.

This purpose of the seminar was to introduce and expose students to STEM career options and provide hands on experience with real world topics and projects leading to the development of the students as future leaders in the STEM fields.

 

What are your feelings about STEM?

“I feel like STEM is great for all kinds of people.  It allows you to dive more in depth about the world, technology, etc.”

 

Do you see yourself as a person who would pursue a career in the STEM field? If so, which field and why?

“Yes, I see myself pursuing a career in sciences, specifically psychology or sociology, becaucareese I like to study the functions of the brain, the actions of humans, and why people do the things they do.”

 

What did you do at the STEM event you attended?

“At the event, I had to design a functional hand using cardboard, sticks, tape, and string.  I also made slime.  The instructors that were there were African American men who knew a GREAT deal about STEM.”

 

How would you describe your feeling about STEM? Are you intimidated? Do you feel like you would be supported as you pursue a career in this field?

“I am supported greatly by my family and different teachers who push me to join the STEM field.  My feelings towards the STEM field are that I think it offers different opportunities to different types of people to work in an advanced field.  Also, I feel like being a part of this field, I would be able to represent African-Americans in a positive way.”

10 to know in education in the UAE in 2017

In celebration of ten years serving the global education community we are highlighting ten to know in education in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) in 2017. The UAE was selected since the founder has been based here the majority of the last ten years. Each person will be shared throughout this year. Our ninth person to know is Dr. Sudha Sunder.

Sudha started her teaching career in 1999 and has taught students from grade 2 through grade 12. She currently serves as an Affiliate Consultant for the Council of International Schools and Associate Consultant for KDSL Global.

A post-graduate diploma holder in computer science, and a Master’s degree holder in Business Administration and Accountancy, she became a part of the IB community in 2006 and taught the IB Course Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS), and soon became an examiner in the subject. Although Sudha was quickly drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of this subject and the IB philosophy of teaching for deep conceptual understanding versus the regurgitation of factual knowledge, she also experienced and resonated with the challenges teachers faced in putting curriculum design principles (that they appreciated in theory) into practice.

Inspired by her own experiences, Sudha decided to certify with Dr. Lynn Erickson in concept-based curriculum and instruction, at the Lynn Erickson Institute in Whitefish, Montana, USA, in 2011. Ever since, she has become a much sought after facilitator in many IB schools for coaching teachers in concept-based curriculum and instruction. Currently, her work spans over seven countries.

An introduction to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) happened while she was serving as the head of the curriculum committee at the Universal American School in Dubai, UAE. As a curriculum design enthusiast, she was very drawn towards the three-dimensional structure of the NGSS and the NGSS’s potential to foster interdisciplinary teaching at the conceptual level (through the crosscutting concepts) and to put into classroom practice the factual and conceptual elements in science learning. She took on every opportunity that would allow engagement in understanding, unpacking and debating on the potential challenges involved in adopting and implementing the NGSS.

In 2013, she presented a paper at the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Common Core Conference convened in Dubai. This was followed by a number of hands-on interactive workshops at conferences and schools that particularly focused on enabling teachers unpack and understand the crosscutting concept component of the NGSS. During this time, she also published an article titled “Fostering Scientific Inquiry through the NGSS” in the Teach UAE Magazine.

It was around this time that Sudha became a Curriculum Reviewer in the IB, Maryland, USA, for a pilot project called “Building a Quality curriculum”. Through this project Sudha reviewed and offered feedback for PYP curriculum documents (both Units of Inquiry and Programmes of Inquiry) for schools in the United States, Europe and India.

The more Sudha mentored, trained, and worked with teachers in curriculum and instruction, the stronger she was convinced that while teachers understand and appreciate the value and notion of teaching for conceptual understanding, putting this into practice in the classroom is indeed challenging. Sudha strongly believes that understanding curriculum design principles involved in three-dimensional concept-based curriculum and instruction is key to addressing this challenge. At present, Sudha continues to present workshops and papers to empower teachers in American IB schools across countries such as Kuwait, Oman, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, UAE, Qatar and India.

As a part-time doctoral research student at the University of Bath in the UK (since 2008), Sudha also decided to explore teacher perceptions in school-based curriculum development initiatives as her doctoral dissertation, which she eventually defended in 2015, with none other than Professor Jeff Thompson and Professor David Phillips from Oxford. Sudha believes that she cleared her viva with no further recommendations or modifications is testimonial to the many teacher voices she has gathered over her work spanning over 7 years in IB/international schools. Sudha’s doctoral dissertation Abstract is now published on SAGE. Sudha writes and publishes articles on the role of ongoing professional development for international educators. Sudha believes that her own journey of learning and transitioning as a teacher in the IB programme and her passion for fostering scientific inquiry amongst students through real-world connection and sustained inquiry has been instrumental in digging deeper into the NGSS. This, along with her strong understanding of curriculum design principles involved in unpacking and implementing three-dimensional curricular frameworks provided her with the knowledge, understanding, skills and experience to explore the breadth and the depth of the NGSS, particularly so in helping IB educators see how the two complement each other in a powerful “synergistic” (Erickson, 2012) fashion. Sudha’s wider research interest includes the role of ongoing professional development for 21st century teachers. Sudha presented her research findings in 2015 at the American Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies (AAACS) at the George Washington University, D.C. She has now been invited to serve as a member of the AAACs Task force.

Launch of Teacher Leaders International

Dubai, 12 April 2017: A new organization, Teacher Leaders International Limited (TLI), has been launched in celebration of over ten years of teacher empowerment and professional development in international education – particularly in the area of curriculum and instruction for American curriculum and international schools.

Through research-based practice, the organization aims to empower educators in curriculum and instruction by collectively harnessing the power of teacher voices in 21st century learning. Currently the global footprint of TLI spans over 9 countries across the Middle East and North Africa region – Kuwait, UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Istanbul, Oman, Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The relentless efforts in furthering curriculum and instruction have also been successfully received in India, Thailand and the United States of America, soon to be extended to the Far East and the United Kingdom.

TLI’s Executive Director is Dr. Sudha Govindswamy (Sunder), an affiliate consultant for the Council of International Schools (CIS), who specializes in Curriculum Design and Delivery. As a certified concept-based curriculum consultant from Dr. Lynn Erickson Institute, Whitefish, Montana, Dr. Sunder works in supporting schools unpack both the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), focusing on the conceptual shift classroom teachers need to understand, while implementing the standards with intellectual rigor and integrity. As an Associate Consultant for KDSL Global, Dr. Sunder has been engaged in work with the KDSL Global team in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In addition, she has worked in seven other countries. Commissioned by the International Baccalaureate (IB) and in collaboration with Achieve, Dr. Sunder has published the Relationship Study Report between the NGSS and the IB, for US high schools engaged in the dual implementation. She has also served as a Curriculum Reviewer for the IB PYP, is an Apple Distinguished Educator and is a SMART Exemplary Educator. Sudha earned her PG in the United Kingdom, her Master’s degree in India and her doctorate in the United Kingdom.
